Yeah, Essel's guide is what gave me a bit of improvement in my work.

Bump. I've been talking to Essel lately, he's been helping me out with my maps and stuff, offering critique.
He was going to add to the thread linked above but never got the time, so he gave me a link to a paper he wrote on mapping technique. He said he might post it someday in the future when he gets the time, but here it is in unmodified format: http://sl4.poned.com/doompaper.pdf
It's a good read for new and experienced mappers alike, but it doesn't talk about detailing specifically, but rather a lot of conceptual stuff that goes a long way to making a genuinely unique and interesting map. With that being said, you should have a basic understanding of how to map at the very least if you're going to endeavor to read it.
